Kabul says Afghanistan-Pakistan peace talks failed again

The Taliban leadership of Afghanistan announced on Saturday that the recent peace negotiations with Pakistan in Turkey were unsuccessful, attributing the failure to Islamabad’s “irresponsible and uncooperative” stance.

Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesman for the Taliban administration, stated on social media that the Pakistani delegation sought to transfer all security responsibilities to the Afghan government, demonstrating an unwillingness to assume responsibility for either Afghanistan’s security or its own.

“The Pakistani delegation’s irresponsible and uncooperative demeanor has produced no results,” he stated.

Islamabad did not provide a fast response.

Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar suggested the previous day that the negotiations were deteriorating, asserting that the responsibility rested with Afghanistan to honour commitments to combat terrorism, “which they have thus far neglected”.

“Pakistan will persist in utilizing all necessary measures to protect the security of its citizens and its sovereignty,” he stated.

The two nations convened in Istanbul on Thursday to attempt to finalise a truce established on October 19 in Qatar, following the most lethal confrontations between the South Asian neighbours since the Taliban regained control in Afghanistan in 2021.
