Modi claims that even during trying times, Russia and India remain united

On Monday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed to Russian President Vladimir Putin that India and Russia remain united, even in challenging circumstances. This statement came after Putin referred to Modi as his “dear friend” and offered him a ride in his armoured limousine.

China and India have emerged as the leading purchasers of crude oil from Russia, which holds the position of the world’s second-largest exporter.  President Trump has implemented further tariffs on India regarding its purchases, yet there is no indication that either India or China will cease their activities.

During the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in Tianjin, China, Prime Minister Modi was seen holding hands with President Putin as they approached Chinese President Xi Jinping. The trio exchanged smiles while engaged in conversation, accompanied by translators.

In a recent post on X, Modi shared a photograph featuring himself alongside Putin inside the armoured Aurus limousine, a vehicle typically associated with the Russian leader.

During his foreign trips, Putin frequently opts for the Aurus, sometimes extending offers for rides to other leaders. Notably, he gifted one of these vehicles to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in 2024.

“In the face of adversity, India and Russia have consistently stood united,” Modi remarked. “The significance of our close cooperation extends beyond the citizens of both nations; it plays a crucial role in fostering global peace, stability, and prosperity.”

During the bilateral meeting, Putin greeted Modi in Russian, referring to him as “Dear Mr Prime Minister, dear friend.”

For decades, Russia and India have upheld a unique relationship characterised by friendship and mutual trust. “This serves as the basis for the advancement of our relations moving forward,” stated Putin.

Modi expressed his support for the recent initiatives focused on halting the conflict in Ukraine, emphasising his desire for a swift resolution to the war. On Saturday, Prime Minister Modi reiterated his commitment to a peaceful resolution during a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, according to a statement from Modi’s office.

In a statement on X on Monday, Modi expressed satisfaction following a productive meeting with President Putin. He highlighted discussions centred around collaboration across various sectors, including trade, fertilisers, space, security, and culture.

“Our Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership continues to serve as a crucial foundation for both regional and global stability,” stated Modi.
