Nuclear plant fire following Russia's downing of a Ukrainian drone

On Sunday, a fire erupted at a Russian nuclear power plant following the military’s interception of a Ukrainian drone, according to statements from the facility after the flames were extinguished.

A device detonated upon impact at the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant in western Russia, igniting fire crews extinguished a blaze that the facility reported.

No casualties were reported following the drone crash at the location, where capacity had been reduced.

The Kursk Nuclear Power Plant reported via Telegram that the radiation background at the industrial site and its vicinity remains unchanged, aligning with natural levels.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has consistently issued warnings regarding the risks associated with military conflicts near nuclear facilities, particularly in the wake of Russia’s military offensive in Ukraine that began in February 2022.

Located close to the Russia-Ukraine border, the plant is positioned to the west of Kursk city, which serves as the capital of the region and is home to approximately 440,000 residents.

Russia currently holds approximately 20% of Ukraine’s territory, which includes the Crimean peninsula that was annexed in 2014.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands, displaced millions from their homes, and led to the devastation of cities and villages throughout eastern and southern Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has consistently dismissed demands from Kyiv and Western nations for an unconditional and immediate ceasefire.
