The government will punish the "heinous act" of attacking the NCP rally in Gopalganj

The government announced today that the “heinous act” of assaulting leaders and activists during a peaceful National Citizens Party (NCP) rally – reportedly executed by individuals associated with the banned Awami League’s Chhatra League and AL activists – will face consequences.

This afternoon, the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing released a statement in which the government condemned the use of violence in Gopalganj, labelling it as “utterly indefensible”.

“Preventing young citizens from peacefully holding a rally to commemorate the one-year anniversary of their revolutionary movement constitutes a grave violation of their fundamental rights,” the statement read.

A statement reveals that members of the National Citizen Party (NCP), along with police and media personnel, faced severe assaults, including vandalism of vehicles and physical attacks on individuals.

The individuals responsible must be promptly identified and held entirely accountable for their actions. A press statement declared, “Such violence against any citizen of Bangladesh is unacceptable.”

The government praised the army and police for their swift response, while also recognising the determination and bravery of the students who continued their rally in the face of these malicious threats.

“Accountability will be sought for those who perpetrated this brutality.” It is imperative to state unequivocally that violence is unacceptable in our country. “Justice must and will prevail,” the statement declared.
