In a significant diplomatic move, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in a video call shortly after Donald Trump‘s inauguration on Monday. Both leaders expressed their commitment to elevating bilateral relations to “greater heights,” as reported by state media from both nations.
In a recent statement, Putin referred to Xi as a “dear friend,” emphasising that Russia and China are strengthening their relationship “based on friendship, mutual trust and support,” even in the face of external pressures.
In a recent statement, Xi urged Putin to enhance their strategic coordination, strengthen mutual support, and protect their legitimate interests.
On Tuesday, Trump issued a warning regarding potential tariffs on Beijing, labelling the nation as “an abuser.” He also cautioned that Moscow could face “big trouble” if it fails to reach an agreement to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
According to foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov, President Putin conveyed to President Xi that any resolution regarding Ukraine “must respect Russian interests.” Ushakov made these remarks to reporters following the call.
Accusations have emerged against Beijing, alleging that the Chinese government is bolstering Moscow’s military capabilities by supplying essential components for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
In 2023, trade between the two nations hit an unprecedented $240 billion (£191 billion), marking an increase of over 64% since 2021, before Russia invaded Ukraine.
“Ushakov stated that Putin and Xi have expressed their willingness to establish relations with the US on a foundation of mutual benefit and respect, contingent upon the Trump team’s interest.”
However, he clarified that the call was “not connected with Trump’s inauguration in any way.”
The conversation extended for approximately ninety minutes, during which Putin and Xi addressed the circumstances in the Middle East, South Korea, and Taiwan, as reported by Ushakov.
According to Chinese state media, Xi was willing to collaborate with Putin to address “external uncertainties,” though no specific details were provided.
Last week, Xi had a phone conversation with Trump, who described the dialogue as a “very good” exchange for both nations. He mentioned that discussions included topics such as trade, fentanyl, and TikTok, among others.
Hours before the inauguration, Putin extended his congratulations to Trump via state television, although the two leaders have not yet engaged in direct conversation.
