Interim government denies Sheikh Mujib as nation's father

Nahid Islam, the interim government’s adviser on Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, stated on Wednesday that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is not acknowledged as the patriarch of the nation.

“Bangabandhu was controversialzed by the Awami League.” AL was in power as a party through authoritarian tactics, including the taking of people’s voting rights, abductions, homicides, and even genocide. Therefore, the new Bangladesh will not honor the individuals who referred to him as the Father of the Nation or the day they designated as National Day. He stated, “Our objective is to reconstruct Bangladesh.”

Nahid responded, “Of course not,” when asked explicitly whether the interim government recognizes Bangabandhu as the Father of the Nation.

He emphasized that a multitude of individuals influenced the nation’s history: “Our history did not commence in 1952.” There have been anti-British struggles in 1947, 1971, 1990, and 2024. Our liberation was granted as a result of the collective endeavors of numerous founding fathers.

The adviser also observed that the Awami League “imposed” the cancellation of national holidays, which he characterized as “fascist behavior.” He further stated, “The government has deemed these days to be of no significance, and as a result, they are being cancelled.”

The provisional government officially declared the cancellation of eight national days earlier in the day. These days include 7 March, which commemorates Bangabandhu’s momentous address, and 15 August, which marks his assassination.
