Ukraine has said it will never give in to Russia’s aggression as it marks 1,000 days since the Kremlin launched a full-scale invasion of the country.

The foreign ministry declared on Tuesday that Ukraine will steadfastly resist the occupiers, asserting that the Russian military will face consequences for its breaches of international law.

Zelensky is set to address a special session of the European Parliament as Ukraine commemorates this significant milestone.

In a tragic turn of events, eight individuals, including a child, lost their lives in a drone attack on Ukraine’s northeastern region of Sumy overnight. This incident follows a separate strike on Sunday that resulted in 89 fatalities.

A drone strike targeting a residential block in the small town of Hlukhiv has resulted in injuries to 12 individuals, among them two children, according to reports from Ukraine’s national police force.

President Zelensky wrote on X that the building was a dormitory at a local school.Zelensky stated, “Russia continues to terrorise our border regions.”

In a video released by the president, emergency workers were observed meticulously sifting through the debris as they persisted in their search for victims on Tuesday morning.

Zelensky stated that the recent attack serves as evidence that Putin “wants the war to continue; he is not interested in discussing peace”.

On Tuesday, he is set to address members of the European Parliament through a video link from Kyiv, marking 1,000 days since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

US President Joe Biden has authorised Ukraine to utilise long-range missiles provided by the United States to target Russia, a significant development announced on Monday.

On Tuesday, local media reports indicate that Zelensky will present an “internal resilience plan” to Ukraine’s parliament.

The country’s military commander in chief announced on Telegram that the nation had endured 1,000 days of what he described as an “extremely complex, fierce battle for our existence” and emphasised the goal of “destroying the enemy”.”

“In the frigid trenches of the Donetsk region and the scorched steppes of Kherson, amidst the barrage of shells, hail, and anti-aircraft fire, a struggle for the fundamental right to life unfolds.”

He stated, “Every night, no matter how many there are, ultimately concludes with the arrival of dawn.”

On Tuesday, the Kremlin sanctioned its revised nuclear doctrine, stating that any aggression from a non-nuclear state, if supported by a nuclear power, will be perceived as a collective assault on Russia.

Russia has indicated that it may resort to nuclear weapons if it perceives a critical threat to its sovereignty. This includes scenarios where conventional weapons are involved, such as an attack on Belarus or a significant deployment of military aircraft, cruise missiles, drones, or other aerial vehicles breaching its borders.

In a tragic incident late Sunday, a Russian strike on Sumy resulted in the deaths of eleven children. The attack also led to a power outage in the region and prompted the evacuation of over 400 residents.

On Sunday, Russian missiles and drones struck power infrastructure throughout Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of at least ten individuals and widespread blackouts.

On Tuesday, Josep Borrell Fontanelles, the EU’s foreign affairs chief, reaffirmed the bloc’s support for Ukraine, emphasising the necessity for the EU to act more urgently and efficiently.

“The European Union is committed to enhancing support aimed at securing victory for Ukraine and fostering peace across the continent,” he stated in a video posted on X.

“Our actions and reactions will be the measure by which history assesses us,” the caption stated.

The host of Ukraine’s United News TV stream, which was initiated at the onset of the invasion to deliver updates on the conflict, stated that the nation is “holding firm – despite the pressure on the front line, the damage to the energy system, and the ongoing bombardment”.

Biden’s decision to permit Ukraine to use US-made long-range missiles against Russia has been received positively. It is a potential measure to recalibrate the power dynamics between the two nations.

Reports indicate that Ukraine has been granted authorisation to deploy missiles specifically for the defence of its troops in Russia’s Kursk region. This development follows a surprise incursion by Kyiv in August amid expectations of an imminent assault involving Russian and Korean forces.
