Australian PM accused of requesting upgrades from Qantas chief

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese faces allegations of soliciting complimentary personal flight upgrades from the former CEO of Qantas, the nation’s flagship airline.

A recent publication by Australian journalist Joe Aston alleges that Albanese contacted former CEO Alan Joyce multiple times, resulting in upgrades on 22 flights taken from 2009 to 2019.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Albanese refrained from confirming whether he had discussed personal upgrades with Joyce. However, he asserted that he adhered to the rules and maintained a stance of being “completely transparent” regarding his disclosures.

“He emphasized that there are no accusations being made with any specifics regarding this matter, none whatsoever,” he added.

Albanese, a former federal transport minister, has taken aim at former opposition party staffer Aston, accusing him of attempting to profit from a book deal.

Aston’s book, The Chairman’s Lounge: The Inside Story of How Qantas Sold Us Out, reveals that Qantas insiders allege Albanese had discussions with Joyce regarding his personal travel arrangements.

Albanese confirmed that he remembered engaging in two discussions with Joyce regarding flights that were unrelated to personal travel. He stated that the Labor Party financed certain upgrades.

“Throughout my tenure in public service, I have consistently upheld integrity, conducted myself in an entirely appropriate manner, and adhered to the rules in my declarations,” he stated.Australian politicians are required to disclose the complimentary flight upgrades they frequently receive.

Australia’s shadow transport minister, Senator Bridget McKenzie, has called for an inquiry to investigate the allegations.

She told reporters, “There are still serious questions that only Mr. Joyce and the Prime Minister can address.”

During an appearance on the popular breakfast news show Today, she shared her own experience of receiving a complimentary flight upgrade in the past. However, she emphasized the distinction between receiving a gift and formally declaring it on a register, compared to making a casual phone call to inform someone about an upcoming holiday with her partner.

What are the possibilities for upgrading those economy tickets?

In the previous year, the Albanese government encountered scrutiny for its decision to deny a request from Qatar Airways to expand its flight operations to Australia, a choice that appeared to benefit Qantas.

Criticism regarding that decision has reemerged, with some opposition leaders questioning Albanese’s personal relationship with Joyce.

Joyce served as the chief executive of Qantas for a notable 15-year tenure, guiding the airline through significant challenges including the 2008 global financial crisis, the COVID pandemic, and unprecedented fuel prices.

By the time he resigned in 2023, Qantas was grappling with escalating public discontent regarding soaring fares, widespread delays, and cancellations, along with concerns about its treatment of employees.
