Dozens are dead when a passenger jet crashes in Kazakhstan

Local officials report that a tragic incident in Kazakhstan has resulted in the deaths of dozens of individuals following the crash of a passenger plane carrying 67 people.

The country’s emergency ministry reported a minimum of 25 individuals have survived.

An Azerbaijan Airlines plane ignited while attempting an emergency landing in proximity to the city of Aktau.

Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2-8243 was travelling from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to Grozny, a city in Russia. According to reports, the diversion was attributed to foggy conditions.

A video authenticated by the Reuters news agency captures the aircraft descending rapidly, and its landing gear is deployed.

Moments following what appears to be an attempted landing, a massive fireball ignites.

The airline reported An emergency landing approximately 3 kilometres (1.9 miles) from Aktau.

A flight departed from Baku at 03:55 GMT on Wednesday, only to crash approximately two and a half hours later at 06:28, according to information from the flight-tracking platform Flightradar24.

The transport ministry reported that the Embraer 190 aircraft was carrying 62 passengers along with five crew members.

Most individuals on board were Azerbaijani nationals, with additional passengers from Russia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.

The emergency ministry reported that of the 25 identified survivors, 22 were transported to the hospital for treatment.

Emergency services were seen in unverified video footage extinguishing a fire and rescuing individuals from the debris.

The government has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the accident. Embraer has told the BBC that it is “prepared to assist all relevant authorities.”
