The United States Air Force (USAF) has confirmed sightings of several unidentified drones over three British airbases.
Between Wednesday and Friday, a series of incidents involving “small unmanned aerial systems” were reported. These systems were observed over RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, as well as RAF Feltwell in the adjacent county of Norfolk.
The United States Air Force, responsible for operating the bases, stated that it remains uncertain at this point whether the drones in question are classified as hostile.
The organization did not provide details on using any defense mechanisms, stating that it maintains “the right to protect” its installations.
A representative from the United States Air Force in Europe confirmed the sighting of small unmanned aerial systems in the areas surrounding RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall, and RAF Feltwell.
The quantity of UASs varied, with a diverse range of sizes and configurations observed. Installation leaders monitored the UASs and concluded none of the incursions affected base residents or critical infrastructure. Officials have stated that they will not disclose specific force protection measures to safeguard operational security.
However, they emphasize their commitment to ensuring the safety of the installation. Authorities actively oversee airspace operations, collaborating with host-nation officials and mission partners to safeguard the protection of base personnel, facilities, and assets.
RAF Mildenhall is the primary base for the USAF’s 100th Air Refuelling Wing.
Meanwhile, RAF Lakenheath hosts USAF F-35A and F-15E fighter jets, and RAF Feltwell focuses on logistics and provides housing for military personnel.
A British Ministry of Defence representative, the entity responsible for the bases, stated: “We take threats seriously and maintain robust measures at defense sites.”The inclusion of counter-drone security capabilities is noteworthy.
“No additional comments will be made regarding security procedures.”
