The United States has executed a new round of strikes on Iran, inciting retaliatory assaults by Iranian forces throughout the Gulf region, resulting in an escalation that further jeopardizes an already tenuous peace.

In the early hours of Monday, the US Central Command (CENTCOM), responsible for US military operations in the Middle East, announced that the US struck numerous targets at various places around Iran.

The attacks on Monday ensued after a distinct series of US strikes on Saturday, during which the US reported targeting over 140 sites throughout Iran in response to IRGC assaults on commercial ships and Tehran’s declaration of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

The recent exchange occurs as the Memorandum of Understanding established by Washington and Tehran in mid-June, which prolonged an April truce and initiated the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, appears to be on the verge of failure.

The accord established a framework intended to terminate the conflict that commenced on February 28 with US-Israeli strikes on Iran and to initiate discussions on more difficult matters, including Iran’s nuclear program.

However, the control of the Strait of Hormuz—through which approximately 20 percent of world petroleum exports transited prior to the onset of the conflict—has persisted as a principal area of contention. US President Donald Trump is advocating for a reduction in oil and gas prices in anticipation of this year’s midterm elections, while Tehran maintains that vessels must navigate the shipping lane nearest to its shore to maintain its authority over maritime traffic.

Iran has consistently attacked vessels navigating the southern channel near the Omani coastline. On Monday, Kpler shipping statistics indicated that vessel activity in the Strait had decreased to its lowest level in five weeks.

Last week, Trump announced the cessation of the truce, subsequently stating on Friday that both parties had consented to persist with negotiations.
