Tulip Siddiq is being questioned in UK over graft allegation

Tulip Siddiq, a Labour Minister in the UK and the niece of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is under scrutiny regarding allegations that she and her family members misappropriated £4 billion (approximately Tk 60,000 crore) from a power plant project in Bangladesh.

On Sunday, Tulip Siddiq was questioned by the Cabinet Office propriety and ethics team regarding the allegation, according to reports from The Telegraph.

Tulip Siddiq is under investigation regarding allegations that she and four family members misappropriated £4 billion in connection with the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant deal in Bangladesh.

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has expressed his support for Tulip, who has refuted the allegations and stated that no authority has reached out to her regarding the claims thus far.

Officials from the Labour Party have labeled the allegations as “spurious,” asserting that they are politically motivated attacks from opponents of Hasina.

In October, investigators from the National Crime Agency (NCA) traveled to Bangladesh to assist in the country’s anti-corruption investigations.

A Conservative Member of Parliament has formally requested that the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner initiate an investigation into Tulip in light of the allegations against her.

In a significant development, Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has initiated an investigation into embezzlement allegations involving former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and niece Tulip Siddiq. This action comes in response to a directive from the High Court.

Tulip Siddiq, 42, serves as the Treasury’s Economic Secretary, tasked with addressing corruption within the UK’s financial markets.

According to a report by The Mail on Sunday, five investigators are collecting “documentary evidence” concerning Tulip and others. They are anticipated to reach out to these individuals in the coming weeks to obtain their responses.

The report indicated that the ACC plans to direct any correspondence to her via the British High Commission in Dhaka.

According to sources who spoke anonymously, the publication reported that upon receiving the responses, investigators will determine if they will proceed with filing First Information Reports.
