US looks at Israel's leak strategy for attacking Iran

House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson has confirmed that the United States is currently investigating a leak of classified documents that detail an American assessment regarding Israel’s potential plans to launch an attack on Iran.

Last week, documents surfaced online that allegedly detail satellite imagery indicating Israel’s movement of military assets in anticipation of a response to Iran’s missile attack on October 1.

According to reports from CBS, the BBC’s US partner, the documents in question, designated as top secret, were accessible for sharing among the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, which includes the United States, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia.

In recent weeks, Israel has been deliberating on the timing and nature of its response to Iran’s recent missile strike. Israel’s defense minister has issued a stark warning, stating that the upcoming actions will be “deadly, precise and surprising.”

Two documents have emerged, allegedly linked to the US National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NSA) and the National Security Agency (NSA). They were shared on an Iranian-aligned Telegram account this past Friday.

On Sunday, Johnson, the leading figure in Congress, expressed to CNN that “the leak is very concerning.”

“Serious allegations are being made, an investigation is currently underway, and I will receive a briefing on the matter in a couple of hours,” stated the Louisiana Republican lawmaker.

The Pentagon acknowledged in a statement that it was aware of the reports concerning the documents but refrained from providing additional comments.

Neither the US agencies involved nor the Israeli government have issued any public statements regarding the leak.

Reports from CNN and Axios have revealed a leak that reaffirms the United States’ surveillance activities on its close ally, Israel.

A document has surfaced that alludes to Israel’s nuclear capabilities, a subject that remains officially unacknowledged by both the United States and Israel. This reference seemingly dismisses the possibility of employing such an option in any forthcoming military action.

A former American intelligence official informed the BBC that the unauthorized release was likely an effort to reveal the extent of the planned retaliation, potentially aiming to hinder it.

Officials have informed the Associated Press (AP) that the United States is currently probing the circumstances surrounding the information leak, examining whether it was deliberately disclosed by a US agent or acquired through potential hacking activities.

Recent analysis indicates that the two documents are grounded in satellite data collected on 15-16 October.

According to the Reuters news agency, the first report is titled: “Israel: Air Force Continues Preparations for Strike on Iran and Conducts a Second Large-Force Employment Exercise.” The document outlines the procedures for managing ballistic and air-to-surface missiles.

The second piece is titled: “Israel: Defense Forces Persist in Essential Munitions Preparations and Covert UAV Operations Likely Aimed at a Strike on Iran.” The report examines the movements of Israeli drones.

On Friday, US President Joe Biden expressed that he had a “good understanding” of Israel’s forthcoming plans.

“Can you provide insight into Israel’s potential actions in response to Iran at this moment and the timing of any such response?” a reporter inquired.

Biden responded affirmatively, stating, “Yes, and yes.”

“Could you provide us with that information?” inquired the journalist.

“Absolutely not, and definitely not.”
